A fun, breezy film set in a gay ghetto in Madrid that borrows from Pedro Almodóvar in its use of colourful, beautiful characters that are also gritty and down-to-earth. The plot centres on a buff, ‘Apollo-esque’ estate agent who is killing old ladies so he can buy, renovate and sell their apartments to middle class gay men and turn Chuecatown into a sophisticated, entirely chic neighbourhood. Standing in his way are a loveable gay couple (bears), a very, very nasty mother-in-law and a police detective with her increasingly gay son in tow. If it all sounds nuts, it is, delightfully so, in that happily Iberian tradition of absurd comedy. The messages – ageism sucks, commercialism is killing gay diversity, love can still conquer all – are buried deep in the recipe of Flahn’s fabulous fruit trifle.

- Revealing mistakes: When the mother-in-law’s boyfriend is attacked in the shower, it is obvious from side view that he is nude. After he slumps into the tub and is interviewed by the hero, the actor is obviously wearing a red-banded underwear.
