Pastrana’s exuberant, award-winning tale of lovers Garate and Omar is set in Madrid in 1995, following their journey as they seek to have a child. Their attempt at artificial insemination goes comically wrong (a lovely sperm bank moment) and they hook up with the pregnant hippie Rachel in their determined quest to be daddies. Around them their friends and community share laughter, madness, sadness and joy as they all get on with their chaotic, multi-coloured lives. It’s a warm, fuzzy film only the crazy Spanish could make and the sheer zest of the film is astonishing – peppered throughout the quirky narrative are camp musical numbers, a counting of 101 kisses, sundry strange dancing muses and a supporting cast of whacky, delightful oddballs.
