Naomi, quiet and dutiful, with an enquiring mind and a brilliant command of the Torah, persuades her ultra-orthodox-rabbi father to send her to midrasha in historic Safed. Having delayed her inevitable marriage by a year, she and her fellow students, including the irreverent Michelle, submerse themselves in the study of the Kabbalah. Naomi and Michelle must look after the beautiful, mysterious and ailing Anouk (French star Fanny Ardant) that is troubled by her past. The girls clandestinely work on purifying their charge. The power of the tikkun they craft also draws Michelle and Naomi inexorably closer and soon boundaries are crossed and their future lies in the balance. Ostensibly about healing, this charming, yet bold film uses the girl’s affair to force them to discover their voices and choose a path within the strictures of orthodox culture.
