October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer is an ever increasing problem, both in South Africa and in other developed nations. According to our Department of Health, It is the most common cancer among white and Asian women, and the second most common among black and coloured women. And men, you’re not immune either – the incidence of breast cancer among men is also on the rise.
The good news is, the 5 year survival rate if it´s caught early (i.e., before it spreads beyond the breast), is now 98%.
So:
- educate yourself at various websites,
- educate yourself on risk factors for breast cancer
- go for clinical check-ups at least once a year,
- check your (or your partner’s) breasts (Breast Self Exam, or BSE) at least once a month (preferably at the same time each month) between clinical check-ups [note: this is where Google calendar’s free sms reminder service can come in handy),
- go for mammograms regularly (every 1 to 2 years, if you are over 40),
- eat a low-fat diet rich in a variety of fruits and vegetables,
- consider reducing your alcohol intake or at least supplementing your diet with folate,
- keep your weight in your ideal range,
- exercise regularly,
- stop smoking and avoid exposure to second hand smoke
